Should I Just Flip Burgers?

So many people I know, friends, family and others seem unable to get employment. They struggle with the age old question “how do I get a job?” Well really, that isn’t the question they are asking. They are really asking “how do I get a job that I will enjoy and people will respect me for?” A much more difficult question and really, one they shouldn’t be asking. We need a generation to just stop and flip burgers. We need to change the way people perceive the humble burger flipper, and indeed the car washer, the bank teller, the telemarketer an all the other jobs that people mock. There are jobs everywhere if you are willing to do something inglorious. If you are a 25 year old jobless person on social security that sits at home all day on Facebook tell me, are you really better off than the guy you went to school with that works at Maccas? He gets paid, not great but paid, to cook fast food in a social, ever changing environment. The work is not high pressure. The work is easy and laid out for you. He meets people. He hangs out with younger people and as a result has a whole host of people who see him as an influencer. He’s the cool guy at Maccas. You see him as the douchebag that works at Maccas, but you are the douchebag that sits at home and does absolutely nothing. Are you really better than him? No way on Earth are you better than him. The day that people like you stop judging the humble burger flipper and pick up your own spatula and start flipping is the day you contribute to not only society, but the future of society in general. If people keep insisting that burger flipping jobs aren’t “cool” or worthy then technology will just invent something to automate it. Once those jobs are gone then all the industrious folk that knew better all along will be back looking for work and these people are markedly more employable than you.
